夜之域

画面由发光的线和面构成一个抽象的空间,一个剥离掉时间和空间的存在,雕塑则来源于这个存在,再次将抽象化的东西具象化,实在化。与之相对, 相补充,相延伸 。

“人就是黑夜”人的黑夜包含无尽的想象, 在这只有纯粹的自我,充满着无处可去的过剩的意识,与抽象的表征。 他们彼此相生相存于这虚无的,无尽的,繁茂的黑夜中。

 

Realm of the Night

 

The paintings consist of glowing lines and planes that form an abstract field, an existence in which time and space are stripped away. The sculptures come into being in light of this existence, re-concretizing and re-substantiating the already abstracted being. The sculptures are contrasting, complimentary with, and the extension of the paintings.

“The human being is this night.” Hegel said. This night includes endless imagination. What it contains are only pure selves, full of overflowing consciousness nowhere to go, and abstract representations.  They give birth to and preserve each other, in this void, infinite and luxuriant night.

卡尔·萨根(Carl Sagan)将地球称之为“苍白的小蓝点(The Pale Blue Dot)”——“地球,一切幸福与痛苦的集合……成千种宗教信仰、意识形态、经济学说……所有的一切都维系在这个悬浮在宇宙中的小尘埃上。”人类,神圣而又渺小,坚强而又脆弱;苦苦探索着世界,尘埃一般消逝。

在《海滩》中,从高空俯视的人变成了形态各异的点尘埃一般散落在海洋中。个人的情感隐匿于一种更宏观的存在,变成了剥离掉个体差异的群像——抽象的、几何的、纯粹的景观。

而另一套作品《岛屿》,将纯粹的、中性的世界抽离之后,如同具有自我意识的生命体一般;莫名并且质樸。

展厅尽头是一件巨大的纯白色霓虹灯线圈,形似漂浮在海里的人,又似散落在海里的岛。

如细胞一般的岛屿,如岛屿一般的人群。寂静的、喧闹的;静止的、涌动的;温吞的、敏感的。散落在真空之中。

群星闪烁,大地无言。

 

BEACH

 

Carl Sagan calls Earth 'the pale blue dot'. 'The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines ... on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.'(Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot, 1994) Sacred and insignificant, staunch and fragile, human beings explore the world strenuously, and disappear like dust.

In Beach, overlooked from high-altitude, people turn into varied-shaped dots, drifting in the ocean. Personal feelings are concealed in some kind of being with more macroscopic scale, and transform into images of a group of people whose personal differences have been stripped off - an abstract, geometrical, and pure scene.

Another work 'Islands' seems a self-conscious living organism, after the pure and neutral world has been extracted; it is strange and artless.

At the end of the exhibition hall lies a huge pure-white neon coil, like people floating in the sea,  or islands scattered in the sea.

The islands just like cells, and crowds just like islands - they are calm and clamorous, still and turbulent, mild and sensitive, scattered in the vacuum.

The stars are twinkling, and the earth taciturn.

《三三行》这套作品由三张画为一组的形式组成,每张画可作为独立的个体存在,世界被线性的概括提炼,但又是非抽象的,保持着基本可认知的轮廓,然而这个轮廓又非随意而为的,是可以体现物体特性的结构线或“生长线”,同时又构建和支撑着整个画面,人这一“主体”仅仅作为一个微量元素存在于画面中,小到失去了“面部”这一个人化的特征,如同一块石头一株植物一样同这个世界同构在一起。关于”三三行“的出处,无论是《西游记》里的“不生不灭三三行”还是禅宗公案里的“前三三后三三”我在这里都不想多说,因为这个生于这个世界的抽象概括亦如这个世界的本身一样是无法穷尽的。

When Confucius was in the Ch'u State, the eccentric Chieh Yu passed his door, saying, "O phoenix! O phoenix! How has thy virtue fallen! Wait not for the coming years, nor hanker back to the past. When the right principles prevail on earth, prophets will fulfill their mission. When the right principles prevail not, they will but preserve themselves. At the present day, they are but trying to keep out of jail! The good fortunes of this world are light as feathers, yet none estimates them at their true value. The misfortunes of this life are weighty as the earth, yet none knows how to keep out of their reach. No more, no more, show off your virtue. Beware, beware, move cautiously on! O brambles, O brambles, wound not my steps! I pick my way about, hurt not my feet!"

Literally, “brambles” was explained as “thorny undergrowth” in Wang Yiyang’s exegesis of Chuangtse. Here I extended its meaning as a symbol of wild plants. Living in the vast world, human being are just fighting as  Achilles and roaming as Odysseus. But plants, like the tentacle spread from depth of the universe, are observing everything. The Nature creates us, but never cares about our existence. 

孔子适楚,楚狂接舆游其门曰: " 凤兮凤兮,何如德之衰也!来世不可待,往世不可追也。天下有道,圣人成焉;天下无道,圣人生焉。方今 之 时 ,仅 免 刑 焉 。福 轻 乎 羽 ,莫 之 知 载 ;祸 重 乎 地 ,莫 之 知 避 。已 乎 已 乎 !临 人 以 德 。殆 乎 殆 乎 !画 地 而 趋 。 迷 阳 迷 阳 ,无 伤 吾 行 ;郄 曲 郄 曲 ,无 伤 吾 足 。”

" 迷阳 " 者,字面意义依王益阳集注作 " 荆棘 ",我这里略为引申,作野生植物之象。人存于于这茫茫天 地间,无非是阿喀琉斯式的杀伐,奥德修斯式的漫游。植物旁观着这一切,仿佛从宇宙深处伸出的触须。 大自然使我们存在,但似乎并不关心我们的存在。

"What was it?" asked Lien Shu."He declared," replied Chien Wu, "that on the Miao-ku-yi mountain there lives a divine one, whose skin is white like ice or snow, whose grace and elegance are like those of a virgin, who eats no grain, but lives on air and dew, and who, riding on clouds with flying dragons for his team, roams beyond the limit's of the mortal regions. When his spirit gravitates, he can ward off corruption from all things, and bring good crops. That is why I call it nonsense, and do not believe it.""Well," answered Lien Shu, "you don't ask a blind man's opinion of beautiful designs, nor do you invite a deaf man to a concert. And blindness and deafness are not physical only. There is blindness and deafness of the mind. His words are like the unspoiled virgin. The good influence of such a man with such a character fills all creation. Yet because a paltry generation cries for reform, you would have him busy himself about the details of an empire!

I would consider “Miao-ku-yi Mountain” as the objective world, because the world is one, the only one you and I are living in, which is reflected by the Miao-ku-yi Mountain. Where is the “divine one” in the mountain? I think it is the “Dao” called by Chuangtse. Human’s birth, aging, illness and death; hostility, hatred, pleasure and love; and all mens doing are both  lowly and holly. Dao is something invisible, but this world is solid before our eyes, so the Miao-ku-yi Mountain is a mirror of the world. 

肩吾问于连叔曰:" 吾闻言于接舆,大而无当,往而不返。吾惊怖其言,犹河汉而无极也,大有径庭,不近人 情焉。" 连叔曰:" 其言谓何哉?"" 曰:' 藐姑射之山,有神人居焉,肌肤若冰雪,绰约若处子;不食五谷,吸风饮露;乘云气,御飞龙,而游乎 四海之外。其神凝,使物不疵疠而年谷熟。' 吾以是狂而不信也。"连叔曰:" 然,瞽者无以与乎文章之观,聋者无以与乎钟鼓之声。岂唯形骸有聋盲哉?夫知亦有之。是其言也, 犹时女也 。之人也 ,之德也 ,将旁礡万物以为一,世蕲乎乱,孰弊弊焉以天下为事!之人也,物莫之伤,大浸稽天而不溺,大旱金石流、土山焦而不热。是其尘垢粃穅,将犹陶 铸尧舜者也,孰肯分分然以物为事! "

我将 " 姑射山 " 理解为客观世界本身:世界无二,姑射山投射之世界亦是你我所生活之世界。姑射山 上 " 神人" 安在?我认为他即是庄子所谓的 " 道 "。人类生老病死,仇恨欢爱,所作所为既卑微而又神圣。 道不可见,而这世界历历在目,姑射山者,当为如是观。

But when we sufficiently got rid of personal understanding, we would see vast and infinite universe. The pureness of the unimaginable vastness ripped off all the inherent perception, leaving us with uneasiness and unadaptability. A conventional world is there, consisting of either noble or vulgar desires, as an ever-growing Tower of Babel which can never be finished; and we, have to dedicate to the endless laboring.

Stanislaw Lem said, "What we are looking for is human, not any existence beyond it. We don't need any other beyond human world, but we need a mirror to reflect it." Human civilization has already created a mirror image of the world between the earth and the sky. This new world is bound to be thriving and prosperous with trees and vines. We framed ourselves in the order, in the dream and in the so-called meaning. We are our own playwright, director and actor, being limited and bound by the script. What we saw is only the world we want to see.

    自古以来,人都是站在“天球 celestial sphere”中心观察宇宙的。天体光芒映射于天球表面的投影,构成“天象”。二十八宿是中国古人沿天球赤经划分的二十八个弧扇。它们依次为——

    北方玄武:斗·牛·女·虚·危·室·壁;西方白虎:奎·娄·胃·昴·毕·参·觜;南方朱雀:井·鬼·柳·星·张·翼·轸;东方苍龙:角·亢·氐·房·心·尾·箕。

   地球旋转,空中二十八宿相对于我们的位置也就发生改变。这种变化首先具备时间意义。毋庸置疑,人类概念里“时间”的本体,就是天体运动周期——何谓“年”?何谓“月”?何谓“日”?这里有“分野”:天体坐标与地理坐标一一对应;有“感应”:星空周转,影响着地下的国祚,而帝王尽人事,则又能反过来影响星空;有“象”:二十八宿七个一组,分成四象,它们分别于春夏秋冬先后升上夜空,调控着大地上的阴阳消长。所谓“天垂象,见吉凶。”(《易经·系辞上》)

    几千年过去了,星象依旧,人世间却已沧海桑田。我们在二十一世纪的夜空下抬首张望,这浩瀚群星所垂之象,对应于今天脆弱易朽的世界,又将呈现着怎样的“感应”与“分野”?这纷乱繁杂的世界,这简单枯燥的世界,这异化无常的世界,这欲求难饱的世界。如此之恶,如此之善。假如人的内心是一面镜子,那镜子的彼端是什么?是所有细节一览无余,却又无恶无善,无美无丑的永恒天体吗?这群体中的疏离,自我的虚空,注定的孤独个体,以及冥冥中的集体的命运。

伯格森(Henri Bergson)这样告诫:“生命冲动如同一条无底无岸的河流,它只是不停流淌着。”而维系宇宙膨胀,星体存亡的大自然终极之力何尝不是一条无始无终的不断流淌的河流。

Since antiquity, human beings have been observing the universe in the middle of the “celestial sphere.”  The 28 constellations are 28 sectors proposed by ancient Chinese along the right ascension.

They are:

tortoise in the north, DipperOxGirlEmptinessRooftopEncampmentWall;

tiger in the west, Legs, Bond, Stomach, Hairy Head, Net, Three Stars, Turtle Beak;

phoenix in the south, Well, Ghost, Willow, Star, Extended Net, Wings, Chariot;

 and dragon in the east respectively, Horn, Neck, Root, Room, Heart, Tail, Winnowing Basket

 

As the Earth spins, the 28 constellations in the sky are moving relative to our position. Such a movement laid the foundation of timing. Undoubtedly, the concept of time is based on the period of motion of the celestial bodies. What is year What is month ? And what is day ? We have the dividing line: Celestial coordinate corresponds to geographical coordinate; they are interacting each other: stars movement influences the state power in human world, while the emperors performance influences the stars in the sky; meanwhile, there are four images consisting of 7 of the 28 constellations, which appear in the evening sky in spring, summer, autumn and winter in turn and control the Yin and Yang, growth and decline on the Earth. This is the said celestial image indicates fortune and misfortune. (Xi Ci I, The Book of Changes)

 

Thousands of years passed. The star images are the same, but the human world has greatly changed. Under the starry sky in the 21st century, the images delivered by the stars will present what “interaction” and “division” corresponding to today’s vulnerable and decaying world?  The messy world, the dull world, the transient world and the world filled with endless desires which cannot be satisfied. Such an evil and such a good world it is. If human heart is a mirror, what is on the opposite side of it? All the details are shown?  Or everlasting celestial body free from good or evil, beauty or ugliness?  The alienation from a group, the emptiness of oneself and the individual bound to be lonely, as well as the predetermined destiny of the group…

 

Henri Bergson once warned, Life impulsion is a river without bottom and bank, flowing forward endlessly. So is the extreme power of the Nature tolerating the Universes expansion and the stars life and death.

Life is a concept of time, and the "time" to measure the length of life is calculated on the basis of celestial movement. Between the individual life and death of star and people, there is an impassable gap. In this sense, time shift is a metaphor of "existence," and the loneliest proposition in human history. In the silent, dull and infinite space, one can only piously look on the vast loneliness.

夜之域

画面由发光的线和面构成一个抽象的空间,一个剥离掉时间和空间的存在,雕塑则来源于这个存在,再次将抽象化的东西具象化,实在化。与之相对, 相补充,相延伸 。

“人就是黑夜”人的黑夜包含无尽的想象, 在这只有纯粹的自我,充满着无处可去的过剩的意识,与抽象的表征。 他们彼此相生相存于这虚无的,无尽的,繁茂的黑夜中。

 

Realm of the Night

 

The paintings consist of glowing lines and planes that form an abstract field, an existence in which time and space are stripped away. The sculptures come into being in light of this existence, re-concretizing and re-substantiating the already abstracted being. The sculptures are contrasting, complimentary with, and the extension of the paintings.

“The human being is this night.” Hegel said. This night includes endless imagination. What it contains are only pure selves, full of overflowing consciousness nowhere to go, and abstract representations.  They give birth to and preserve each other, in this void, infinite and luxuriant night.

卡尔·萨根(Carl Sagan)将地球称之为“苍白的小蓝点(The Pale Blue Dot)”——“地球,一切幸福与痛苦的集合……成千种宗教信仰、意识形态、经济学说……所有的一切都维系在这个悬浮在宇宙中的小尘埃上。”人类,神圣而又渺小,坚强而又脆弱;苦苦探索着世界,尘埃一般消逝。

在《海滩》中,从高空俯视的人变成了形态各异的点尘埃一般散落在海洋中。个人的情感隐匿于一种更宏观的存在,变成了剥离掉个体差异的群像——抽象的、几何的、纯粹的景观。

而另一套作品《岛屿》,将纯粹的、中性的世界抽离之后,如同具有自我意识的生命体一般;莫名并且质樸。

展厅尽头是一件巨大的纯白色霓虹灯线圈,形似漂浮在海里的人,又似散落在海里的岛。

如细胞一般的岛屿,如岛屿一般的人群。寂静的、喧闹的;静止的、涌动的;温吞的、敏感的。散落在真空之中。

群星闪烁,大地无言。

 

BEACH

 

Carl Sagan calls Earth 'the pale blue dot'. 'The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines ... on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.'(Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot, 1994) Sacred and insignificant, staunch and fragile, human beings explore the world strenuously, and disappear like dust.

In Beach, overlooked from high-altitude, people turn into varied-shaped dots, drifting in the ocean. Personal feelings are concealed in some kind of being with more macroscopic scale, and transform into images of a group of people whose personal differences have been stripped off - an abstract, geometrical, and pure scene.

Another work 'Islands' seems a self-conscious living organism, after the pure and neutral world has been extracted; it is strange and artless.

At the end of the exhibition hall lies a huge pure-white neon coil, like people floating in the sea,  or islands scattered in the sea.

The islands just like cells, and crowds just like islands - they are calm and clamorous, still and turbulent, mild and sensitive, scattered in the vacuum.

The stars are twinkling, and the earth taciturn.

《三三行》这套作品由三张画为一组的形式组成,每张画可作为独立的个体存在,世界被线性的概括提炼,但又是非抽象的,保持着基本可认知的轮廓,然而这个轮廓又非随意而为的,是可以体现物体特性的结构线或“生长线”,同时又构建和支撑着整个画面,人这一“主体”仅仅作为一个微量元素存在于画面中,小到失去了“面部”这一个人化的特征,如同一块石头一株植物一样同这个世界同构在一起。关于”三三行“的出处,无论是《西游记》里的“不生不灭三三行”还是禅宗公案里的“前三三后三三”我在这里都不想多说,因为这个生于这个世界的抽象概括亦如这个世界的本身一样是无法穷尽的。

When Confucius was in the Ch'u State, the eccentric Chieh Yu passed his door, saying, "O phoenix! O phoenix! How has thy virtue fallen! Wait not for the coming years, nor hanker back to the past. When the right principles prevail on earth, prophets will fulfill their mission. When the right principles prevail not, they will but preserve themselves. At the present day, they are but trying to keep out of jail! The good fortunes of this world are light as feathers, yet none estimates them at their true value. The misfortunes of this life are weighty as the earth, yet none knows how to keep out of their reach. No more, no more, show off your virtue. Beware, beware, move cautiously on! O brambles, O brambles, wound not my steps! I pick my way about, hurt not my feet!"

Literally, “brambles” was explained as “thorny undergrowth” in Wang Yiyang’s exegesis of Chuangtse. Here I extended its meaning as a symbol of wild plants. Living in the vast world, human being are just fighting as  Achilles and roaming as Odysseus. But plants, like the tentacle spread from depth of the universe, are observing everything. The Nature creates us, but never cares about our existence. 

孔子适楚,楚狂接舆游其门曰: " 凤兮凤兮,何如德之衰也!来世不可待,往世不可追也。天下有道,圣人成焉;天下无道,圣人生焉。方今 之 时 ,仅 免 刑 焉 。福 轻 乎 羽 ,莫 之 知 载 ;祸 重 乎 地 ,莫 之 知 避 。已 乎 已 乎 !临 人 以 德 。殆 乎 殆 乎 !画 地 而 趋 。 迷 阳 迷 阳 ,无 伤 吾 行 ;郄 曲 郄 曲 ,无 伤 吾 足 。”

" 迷阳 " 者,字面意义依王益阳集注作 " 荆棘 ",我这里略为引申,作野生植物之象。人存于于这茫茫天 地间,无非是阿喀琉斯式的杀伐,奥德修斯式的漫游。植物旁观着这一切,仿佛从宇宙深处伸出的触须。 大自然使我们存在,但似乎并不关心我们的存在。

"What was it?" asked Lien Shu."He declared," replied Chien Wu, "that on the Miao-ku-yi mountain there lives a divine one, whose skin is white like ice or snow, whose grace and elegance are like those of a virgin, who eats no grain, but lives on air and dew, and who, riding on clouds with flying dragons for his team, roams beyond the limit's of the mortal regions. When his spirit gravitates, he can ward off corruption from all things, and bring good crops. That is why I call it nonsense, and do not believe it.""Well," answered Lien Shu, "you don't ask a blind man's opinion of beautiful designs, nor do you invite a deaf man to a concert. And blindness and deafness are not physical only. There is blindness and deafness of the mind. His words are like the unspoiled virgin. The good influence of such a man with such a character fills all creation. Yet because a paltry generation cries for reform, you would have him busy himself about the details of an empire!

I would consider “Miao-ku-yi Mountain” as the objective world, because the world is one, the only one you and I are living in, which is reflected by the Miao-ku-yi Mountain. Where is the “divine one” in the mountain? I think it is the “Dao” called by Chuangtse. Human’s birth, aging, illness and death; hostility, hatred, pleasure and love; and all mens doing are both  lowly and holly. Dao is something invisible, but this world is solid before our eyes, so the Miao-ku-yi Mountain is a mirror of the world. 

肩吾问于连叔曰:" 吾闻言于接舆,大而无当,往而不返。吾惊怖其言,犹河汉而无极也,大有径庭,不近人 情焉。" 连叔曰:" 其言谓何哉?"" 曰:' 藐姑射之山,有神人居焉,肌肤若冰雪,绰约若处子;不食五谷,吸风饮露;乘云气,御飞龙,而游乎 四海之外。其神凝,使物不疵疠而年谷熟。' 吾以是狂而不信也。"连叔曰:" 然,瞽者无以与乎文章之观,聋者无以与乎钟鼓之声。岂唯形骸有聋盲哉?夫知亦有之。是其言也, 犹时女也 。之人也 ,之德也 ,将旁礡万物以为一,世蕲乎乱,孰弊弊焉以天下为事!之人也,物莫之伤,大浸稽天而不溺,大旱金石流、土山焦而不热。是其尘垢粃穅,将犹陶 铸尧舜者也,孰肯分分然以物为事! "

我将 " 姑射山 " 理解为客观世界本身:世界无二,姑射山投射之世界亦是你我所生活之世界。姑射山 上 " 神人" 安在?我认为他即是庄子所谓的 " 道 "。人类生老病死,仇恨欢爱,所作所为既卑微而又神圣。 道不可见,而这世界历历在目,姑射山者,当为如是观。

To seek for truth, human beings have always been trying to look at things from other's perspective, attempting to reflect our position selflessly. But when we sufficiently got rid of personal understanding, we would see vast and infinite universe. The pureness of the unimaginable vastness ripped off all the inherent perception, leaving us with uneasiness and unadaptability. A conventional world is there, consisting of either noble or vulgar desires, as an ever-growing Tower of Babel which can never be finished; and we, have to dedicate to the endless laboring.

Stanislaw Lem said, "What we are looking for is human, not any existence beyond it. We don't need any other beyond human world, but we need a mirror to reflect it." Human civilization has already created a mirror image of the world between the earth and the sky. This new world is bound to be thriving and prosperous with trees and vines. We framed ourselves in the order, in the dream and in the so-called meaning. We are our own playwright, director and actor, being limited and bound by the script. What we saw is only the world we want to see.

为了穷究真理,人总是尽力将自己他者化,试图将自己抽离来反思我们自身的状态,然而当我们抽离的足 够远时,我们触碰到了广阔而又无始无终的洪荒,这巨大得不可思议的纯粹性,将一切固有的认知席卷 而去,令我们无所适从。世俗世界伫立在那儿,它由或高贵或鄙俗的欲望所构建,是一座永远生长而永 远难以完成的巴别之塔;而我们沉溺于这永恒的劳役。

莱姆 (Stanislaw Lem) 说:" 我们寻找的是人,而不是人以外的存在,我们并没有人以外世界的需求,我 们需要的是人的镜子。"人类文明已经在泥土和星光之间创造了一个世界的镜像。这个新世界注定将生长得枝叶繁茂 , 蔓交错 。我们将自己嵌在秩序中 ,嵌在梦想中 ,嵌在意义中 ,我们自编自导自演 ,一 不小心还被剧本奴役着限制着,我们看到的只是我们想看到的世界。

    自古以来,人都是站在“天球 celestial sphere”中心观察宇宙的。天体光芒映射于天球表面的投影,构成“天象”。二十八宿是中国古人沿天球赤经划分的二十八个弧扇。它们依次为——

    北方玄武:斗·牛·女·虚·危·室·壁;西方白虎:奎·娄·胃·昴·毕·参·觜;南方朱雀:井·鬼·柳·星·张·翼·轸;东方苍龙:角·亢·氐·房·心·尾·箕。

   地球旋转,空中二十八宿相对于我们的位置也就发生改变。这种变化首先具备时间意义。毋庸置疑,人类概念里“时间”的本体,就是天体运动周期——何谓“年”?何谓“月”?何谓“日”?这里有“分野”:天体坐标与地理坐标一一对应;有“感应”:星空周转,影响着地下的国祚,而帝王尽人事,则又能反过来影响星空;有“象”:二十八宿七个一组,分成四象,它们分别于春夏秋冬先后升上夜空,调控着大地上的阴阳消长。所谓“天垂象,见吉凶。”(《易经·系辞上》)

    几千年过去了,星象依旧,人世间却已沧海桑田。我们在二十一世纪的夜空下抬首张望,这浩瀚群星所垂之象,对应于今天脆弱易朽的世界,又将呈现着怎样的“感应”与“分野”?这纷乱繁杂的世界,这简单枯燥的世界,这异化无常的世界,这欲求难饱的世界。如此之恶,如此之善。假如人的内心是一面镜子,那镜子的彼端是什么?是所有细节一览无余,却又无恶无善,无美无丑的永恒天体吗?这群体中的疏离,自我的虚空,注定的孤独个体,以及冥冥中的集体的命运。

伯格森(Henri Bergson)这样告诫:“生命冲动如同一条无底无岸的河流,它只是不停流淌着。”而维系宇宙膨胀,星体存亡的大自然终极之力何尝不是一条无始无终的不断流淌的河流。

Since antiquity, human beings have been observing the universe in the middle of the “celestial sphere.”  The 28 constellations are 28 sectors proposed by ancient Chinese along the right ascension.

They are:

tortoise in the north, DipperOxGirlEmptinessRooftopEncampmentWall;

tiger in the west, Legs, Bond, Stomach, Hairy Head, Net, Three Stars, Turtle Beak;

phoenix in the south, Well, Ghost, Willow, Star, Extended Net, Wings, Chariot;

 and dragon in the east respectively, Horn, Neck, Root, Room, Heart, Tail, Winnowing Basket

 

As the Earth spins, the 28 constellations in the sky are moving relative to our position. Such a movement laid the foundation of timing. Undoubtedly, the concept of time is based on the period of motion of the celestial bodies. What is year What is month ? And what is day ? We have the dividing line: Celestial coordinate corresponds to geographical coordinate; they are interacting each other: stars movement influences the state power in human world, while the emperors performance influences the stars in the sky; meanwhile, there are four images consisting of 7 of the 28 constellations, which appear in the evening sky in spring, summer, autumn and winter in turn and control the Yin and Yang, growth and decline on the Earth. This is the said celestial image indicates fortune and misfortune. (Xi Ci I, The Book of Changes)

 

Thousands of years passed. The star images are the same, but the human world has greatly changed. Under the starry sky in the 21st century, the images delivered by the stars will present what “interaction” and “division” corresponding to today’s vulnerable and decaying world?  The messy world, the dull world, the transient world and the world filled with endless desires which cannot be satisfied. Such an evil and such a good world it is. If human heart is a mirror, what is on the opposite side of it? All the details are shown?  Or everlasting celestial body free from good or evil, beauty or ugliness?  The alienation from a group, the emptiness of oneself and the individual bound to be lonely, as well as the predetermined destiny of the group…

 

Henri Bergson once warned, Life impulsion is a river without bottom and bank, flowing forward endlessly. So is the extreme power of the Nature tolerating the Universes expansion and the stars life and death.

In vast and infinite wilderness, huge and dense neon lights are floating lonely as the light sources, easy and relaxed; At the moment, the flying time and the changing context are nothing at all; Here, it is an everlasting neon universe.

Four Seasons consists of 4 parts, corresponding to the star atlases in the evenings of the spring equinox, summer solstice, autumnal equinox and winter solstice between the Yellow River and the Yangtze River. Life is a concept of time, and the "time" to measure the length of life is calculated on the basis of celestial movement. Between the individual life and death of star and people, there is an impassable gap. In this sense, time shift is a metaphor of "existence," and the loneliest proposition in human history. In the silent, dull and infinite space, one can only piously look on the vast loneliness.

漫漫无止境的虚空中,巨大、密集的霓红灯作为光源独自漂浮着,自得其乐;时光的流逝、文脉的流变、 语境的更换,此时不再起作用;这是一个垂万古不变,而仅有霓虹灯生长的宇宙。

In vast and infinite wilderness, huge and dense neon lights are floating lonely as the light sources, easy and relaxed; At the moment, the flying time and the changing context are nothing at all; Here, it is an everlasting neon universe.

Four Seasons consists of 4 parts, corresponding to the star atlases in the evenings of the spring equinox, summer solstice, autumnal equinox and winter solstice between the Yellow River and the Yangtze River. Life is a concept of time, and the "time" to measure the length of life is calculated on the basis of celestial movement. Between the individual life and death of star and people, there is an impassable gap. In this sense, time shift is a metaphor of "existence," and the loneliest proposition in human history. In the silent, dull and infinite space, one can only piously look on the vast loneliness.
